Eli Kohn standing beside his Electric E30

I’m Eli Kohn, a Mechanical Engineering student at Cal Poly SLO.

My interest in engineering has been fostered from a young age by my father. I gained confidence building things through household projects, and was always encouraged to tinker. Whether this was to satisfy my curiosity about what was inside, fix something, or learn how something worked, I started to feel comfortable working with tools and electronics.

Converting my E30 is what kickstarted my interest in engineering specifically. Although I started the project in high school, it stretched into my first year of college. In high school, when it came time to start applying to colleges, I had no idea what I wanted to do. I went to community college for engineering as I started dedicating more of my time to the E30. Early in my second semester of college I finished the conversion, and the feeling of driving it was enough for me to become enamored with engineering.

After building the railcart, I connected with someone who was selling their own railcart on Facebook Marketplace. That person turned out to be the lead engineer at AgRobotics, where I interned over the summer of 2026. This internship sparked an interest in robotics. I’m currently spending my time exploring this interest.
